Part of the house painting project was to replace the front door. We wanted a door with a few windows in it to let some light into the foyer. We found a new front door and storm door at Home Depot and were very happy with the way they both looked. We had been without a screen/storm door now since the beginning of the summer and really missed having the breeze in the house. We figured out a way to have the same effect without the actual screen door....using Maeve's baby gate we created this:
REDNECK SCREEN DOOR!
Dad and I started the install and figured it would probably take a day. We had to replace the entire door and frame due to the condition it was in. The removal of the old door went good and in about 30 minutes, I was minus a front door on the house!
The installation part however, didn't go so easy. Between the new door not being 100% square in the frame and the existing door opening being framed oddly, it took us two entire days to get the new door hung, squared, trimmed out, and hardware installed. The end result was wonderful! It is very nice having all that light shining in the foyer in the morning! As I type this, I have the outside door trim painted, I still have to touch up the green house color along the trim, and then we need to install the storm door. Once I get the storm door up, I will be able to take the new front door off the hinges to paint it even when it gets colder out.
In the middle of the front door project, Shannon called me and said that the Jeep isn't starting. She was just down the road at the hair salon, so I had her try a couple things over the phone, which didn't help, so I had to leave Dad at home with no front door on the house! When I got to the Jeep, I noticed the battery cable had really got corroded, and almost corroded through the positive battery cable. I ended up getting the Jeep jumped and drove it home. The next day, I got a new battery cable bought and installed, but it was still not starting. It turns out the actual battery was bad also. The nice thing is that it was only three months old, so to get a new battery only cost me about $40! After the new battery was installed, the Jeep fired right up!
Other than the above, I did manage to get a couple more things done around the house:
- Raked, blew, and mowed all the leaves in the yard (using the tractor was amazing!)
- Cleaned out the gutters (using the leaf blower!)
- Got the water shut off and the hoses put away
- Got the lawnmower and tractor winterized and put away
- Got the snowblower out
- Got the snowmobiles and trailer in the drive and off the lawn
So as it stands right now, I have a few more leaves that I need to get mowed up once it drys out and I should be ready for winter.

The door looks good, your house is really becoming your home! We did the same thing a few years back, added a front door with a window. It makes A WORLD of difference when you have some light coming in. NICE WORK!
